The Design Process

Consultation

Consultation

We begin the process with a consultation session, either by you visiting our shop or through the website. Both methods offer top notch service and creative insight from artistic professionals.

Sketching

Consultation

Next, we begin to sketch out various concepts. this is a very exploratory stage where we look at what design elements you want to incorporate into the piece and how best to make the design work together.

Computer Aided Design-CAD

Consultation

Utilizing our Computer Aided Design System, Matrix, we define the design to hundredths of millimeters and create a virtual version of the design.

Rendering

Consultation

We next will create a computer generated image of the piece, or render. The great advantage of this system is not only in allowing us to showcase all the various options in the design from different metal colors to different gemstone colors as well as gem shapes.

Design Selection

Consultation

At this point we finalize the final design from the many options and provide complete estimates of cost and time to complete the piece. We request a 50% deposit at this point and order any gemstones or raw metal we will need for the casting and schedule the production of your piece. All diamonds that McCoy's utilizes are conflict free diamonds and adhere to the Kimberly Process.

Wax Carving

Consultation

Blending both hand carving and machine carving we are able to create detailed designs like never before achievable.

Investing

Consultation

Investing is not just what you should do with your hard earned money, but the process of creating the casting mold using a special type of plaster called investment. The wax design is mounted onto a hub and the entire hub connected to a metal flask. Investment plaster is mixed, vacuumed to remove all gas bubbles and poured around the wax filling the metal flask. After curing and becoming hard, the hub is removed and the flasks put into a oven to be heated to temperatures of 1350 degrees to burn out the wax and leave a clean mold of your piece ready to be filled with gold, silver or platinum.

Casting

Consultation

Casting metal is weighed and added to a ceramic crucible where a torch will heat it to upwards of 1800 degrees. Once the metal reaches it's melting point the flask for your piece will be removed from the oven, temperature of around 1000 degrees, and placed into a centrifugal casting machine. Once ready, the casting machine will swing at high speeds shooting the molten metal from the crucible to the flask, filling the mold and completing the casting process.

Pre-Finish

Consultation

The rough design is examined and verified for quality. Extra metal is cut away and its surface is filed and ground smooth in preparation for stone setting and the final finished polish.

Final Finish

Consultation

Stones are set, final hand polishing is completed. Your design is ready to be worn and enjoyed for years to come.
